Introduction
Android Auto, the familiar infotainment system from Google, offers a potential solution. By integrating Android Auto into a motorcycle cluster, riders could access navigation, music, and even calls through a familiar interface, all without taking their eyes off the road. This concept, known as "Android Auto on Bikes," could revolutionize motorcycle UX by enhancing safety, convenience, and keeping riders connected while they ride.
Problem
How might we create a motorcycle experience that keeps riders safe and connected by integrating familiar features like navigation and music, without compromising focus on the road?
Research
The initial design aimed at automating light changes based on user input but lacked real-time adaptability, limiting its overall effectiveness. The research findings support the value proposition of this project. There is a clear demand for safer and more convenient ways to access information while riding. Android Auto integration has the potential to address this need by providing a familiar and user-friendly interface for essential features.
"
82% of respondents acknowledged the dangers of looking at phones while riding.
Ideation
Based on these findings, the initial project scope could focus on integrating core functionalities (navigation, music) within the Android Auto interface on the motorcycle cluster. The design should prioritize a clear and concise layout to avoid information overload on the display.
"
45% of respondents were familiar with Android Auto, and 62% expressed interest in using it on a motorcycle cluster
Solution
The core Android Auto interaction principles were adapted for the motorcycle cluster design with safety and focus in mind. While prioritizing essential motorcycle data like speed for constant visibility, the layout integrates core Android Auto features seamlessly. To minimize the need to look down, voice commands and potential handlebar controls are explored for interacting with navigation and music. Glanceability is emphasized through clear icons and a high-contrast color scheme suitable for various lighting conditions.
INTERACTION PRINCIPLES

Interactions between a driver and a screen must be simple, non-distracting, and easily interrupted, so the driver’s attention can quickly return to the road.
Conclusion
I selected font as Roboto because it's familiar to Android Auto users. In critical situations, even a 5% -10% reduction in glance times can be life-saving, which led us to incorporate this typeface family into our design.
